The main reason for serious deformities is the insufficient control of the occlusion by the parents and the failure to observe the schedule of visits to the dentist Bite problems are familiar to many adults. The main reason for serious deformities is the insufficient control of the occlusion by the parents and the non-observance of the schedule of visits to the dentist. Any difficulties with a bite can be more convenient and faster solved in childhood.

Why is bite monitoring important from an early age?

One of the main causes of malocclusion is heredity. If parents and grandparents have problems, then the child needs a regular visit to the dentist. Most likely, the curvature will be noticeable already with the appearance of the first milk teeth. Do not wait for their change to permanent – early correction is considered one of the most effective approach to deal with it.

Even if the whole family is distinguished by even strong teeth, teach your child the correct articulation. There are frequent cases of deformation of 1-2 teeth due to a constant incorrect position of the tongue. Also, the cause of the curvature can be premature extraction of milk teeth, trauma, malnutrition, bad habits, such as prolonged sucking of the nipples, fingers and lip sucking.

Signs of malocclusion in a child:

  • Teeth come forward or come back.
  • Separate teeth rotated along its axis
  • Large gaps between teeth
  • Incorrect jaw closure
  • Irregularities in a number of teeth are visible to the eye.

How to correct a child’s bite?

Consult a doctor orthodontist no later than 5-6 years of age. Half the success is to start bite correction with deciduous teeth. The specialist will determine the method of correcting the bite, taking into account the individual characteristics of the child.

Today are widely used:

Myotherapy

A comfortable technique for correcting malocclusion without braces, using special exercises. They train facial and chewing muscles, can be used from 4 years. During classes, adult control is necessary.

Hardware

From the age of 6 it is possible to use trainers and records. Depending on the degree of curvature, removable or fixed structures are chosen. The plates can be removed during eating, brushing and sleeping, but you need to wear constantly the rest of the time. Trainers are devices for temporary wearing, for example, for 3-4 hours daily, they are used for crowding of teeth and the appearance of gaps between them. Braces can only be installed on permanent teeth from 12 years. If bite correction measures were taken in a timely manner, and exercises and wearing corrective devices were regular, then the problem can be solved before this time.

Surgical method.

It is used for severe anomalies associated not only with the location and growth of teeth, but also with the development of skull bones. The operation is performed under anesthesia and the jaw is fixed with special inserts, after which a splint is applied for constant wear for 2-3 weeks.

How to prevent malocclusion in children?

Some ways to prevent malocclusions in children include:

  • During pregnancy, you need to eat foods rich in fluoride and calcium.
  • For artificial feeding, choose orthopedic nipples.
  • In the diet of the child should be enough solid food (carrots, apples, nuts)
  • Watch the child’s breathing through the nose – if it is difficult, consult a doctor.
  • Visit the dentist 2 times a year, even without complaints. This will allow you to constantly monitor the development of the bite.

How Can You Help My Dental Anxiety?

Our dentists in Fair Lawn, NJ, Dr. Boris Kleyman and Dr. Denada Kleyman, have several ways to help ease your dental anxiety:

  • We encourage all of our patients to meet with us to discuss any fears or concerns they may have before their first visit. We want to make sure our patients are comfortable knowing what to expect, and that we are here to help with anything they need.
  • We offer music to help relax our patients and distract them from the procedure. We also encourage our patients to give us hand signals if needed during any appointment, so we know all is well. If patients want us to stop, or need a break during a procedure, our staff will make sure to give patients the time they need.
  • We communicate to our patients throughout each appointment, letting them know what we are doing through each step of the procedure. Doing this helps keep the patient at ease so they know what is happening at all stages. This also helps them to mentally prepare for what is next.
  • Oral anxiety medications may be recommended to our patients to help them relax during a procedure. These are short acting and can be taken an hour or so before a procedure to keep patients with dental anxiety calm and at ease.

Bright Star Sapphire Dental - Family of four (boy, girl, mother, father) laughing

Safety is our number one priority at Bright Star Sapphire Dental. We want children to feel safe and relaxed when they have to come see us for an appointment. Making sure a child feels comfortable and calm during any dental visit is extremely important.

In many cases there are ways to help make a child feel calm when they have to visit the dentist. Our practice offers different types of sedation options for children to help keep them at ease during a visit. If a child has had a previous negative experience it may be difficult for them to go to another dentist and sit calmly through an appointment.

What Sedative Options Do You Offer?

We offer safe options for our patients to help make their experience at our office an exceptional one! Below are some sedative options that our dental office in Fair Lawn, NJ provides:

Nitrous Oxide:

This method of sedation is also referred to as “laughing gas”, and is a safe and effective way to keep patients relaxed and happy. Nitrous Oxide keeps patients relaxed, but they are still awake during a procedure or appointment. Patients can still respond to the dentist, and the effects will wear off instantly when the procedure is complete.

Mild Sedation:

This method is induced using drugs administered orally, and only done when Nitrous Oxide will not be enough. This method is also safe, and the child’s weight and age are used to determine the recommended dose for treatment.

Deep Sedation:

This method of sedation is done using intravenous drugs, and with this method the child is completely asleep during the procedure. This method is only used with absolutely necessary, and the other two methods are not appropriate for the treatment needed.

All methods of sedation are safe, and we make safety for all our patients our first priority with any visit or procedure. Our friendly staff will discuss all options, and help parents feel at ease choosing the best option that fits their child’s needs.

We want all of our patients to feel at home when they walk into our office, and trust that we will take the very best care of them.
